A Great “Walking-Around” Lens
Updated: Sep 17, 2020
I love shooting outdoor scenes and living along Ireland’s western seaboard gives me more scope than most when it comes to incredible landscapes and seascapes but let’s not forget urban, street and city photography, all the above can be covered with just one lens the Canon 24-105mm f/4, and does it them all remarkably well.
Sure, there is a place for prime lenses. But do we really need to carry a bunch of lens around and in all truth sometimes you just don’t want to have to change lenses.
With the 24-105mm, you can carry one lens of high quality and moderate size, and shoot with it all day. It will shoot landscapes, urban, street, and people photography really well, it’s also the ideal lens for taking on a family holiday, where you will likely encounter any or all of these scenes.
More than just a good walk-around lenses.
The 24-105mm is an L-series lens and is fully weather sealed it’s also sharp and has great image quality, known for fast and accurate focusing. My personal experience with it has borne this out. But beyond that, any test I have ever seen of this lens has given it high marks. I have honestly never seen a bad review of this lens.
For many, the 24-105mm will be a great choice. Rarely will you see this combination of focal length, quality in one affordable package. I would say that it would make a great addition to your photography bag, except that it is likely that this lens won’t spend much time in your bag!
Two versions of this lens are now available the original and the mark ii both in my opinion offering all the benefits as described above. The only obvious improvement I have been able to determine on the version ii is an upgrade with regards image stabilization; optically they seem to perform identically in real world shooting.
