Canon EF 24-105mm IS STM Review
Updated: May 19
The Canon EF 24-105mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM is a general-purpose 4.4x zoom designed for full-frame DSLRs, although also compatible with cropped-frame APS-C models upon which it delivers a 38-168mm equivalent range. Employing Canon’s STM focusing which is smoother and quieter for live view and movie shooting, while also costing almost half the price of the EF 24-105mm f4L IS II USM.
The unique selling point of the EF 24-105mm STM is its focusing system: it becomes the first full-frame EF zoom with Canon’s lead screw-type stepping motor, allowing it to focus quietly and smoothly in movies and live view. It’s also the only full-frame STM lens with image stabilization that’s wider than 40mm. These all make it the ideal walk-around companion for full-frame bodies with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, and in my tests it punches above its weight in terms of image quality. The optical quality for the relatively low price makes it a bargain in the Canon line up, and if you want an STM zoom for a full-frame body, it’s the only game in town.
What I love about this lens
Smooth, silent focusing when shooting stills and movies with imagine stabilization bettering that of the more expensive L series, (4-stop Image Stabilizer).
When shooting movies, STM focusing delivers smooth, near-silent AF that gives footage a professional look and feel. When shooting still photos, focusing is swift and accurate, so you’ll always capture that special moment.
Great/versatile zoom range
Image stabilization / 4-stop Image Stabilizer
STM motor for video
CONS and believe me there aren’t many
Not dust- and moisture-proof
Light construction compared to 24-105mm L versions, although this could be seen as a positive from a weight point of view.
And probably my only real gripe is the variable aperture; this is forgivable though when you look at the pros.
All in all a great all-round travel and Vlogging lens covering everything from portrait to landscape photography.
